Winchester - Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters

Our last stop of the day was to Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters located in Winchester Virginia.

  • Gothic Revival Style House
  • Used by General Jackson during the winter of 1861-1862
  • The house was originally owned and built by William McP. Fuller in 1752.
  • April 1, 1856 - sold the "cottage" to Lewis T. Moore.
  • Lewis T. Moore was a Colonel during the Civil War with the 4th Virginia Volunteers.
  • He was injured in battle and had to spend time regaining his strength and saving his leg.
  • Lt. Col. Lewis T. Moore invited Jackson to use his house as his winter headquarters.



Interesting facts we learned about the house:

1. Mary Tyler Moore a descendant of Lt. Col. Moore helped to cover the cost of the restoration of the house.
2. Thomas Jackson's first wife died in childbirth (Elinor Junkin)
3. Thomas Jackson married Mary Ann Morrison
4. Thomas Jackson was baptized by an Episcopal minister after the Mexican War
5. Both of Jackson's wives were daughters of Presbyterian ministers.
6. Jackson was at the execution of John Brown.
7. Jackson's daughter - Julia Laura Jackson was under a year old when her father died. He only saw her about five times.
8. Jackson was wounded by "friendly fire." His arm was amputated. He contracted pneumonia and died.
9. Jackson's widow never remarried.
10. Jackson and his sister used to have a close relationship until the Civil War. Laura was an unionist who cared for wounded Federal soldiers in her home.
11. Julia Jackson married William E. Christian and had two children. She will die young from typhoid fever. Her daughter Julia Jackson Christian will live to be 103.
