Fredericksburg - Kenmore Plantation

In Fredericksburg we took a tour of Kenmore Plantation. It was the colonial home of Betty Washington Lewis and her husband, Fielding Lewis. Betty Washington Lewis was the sister of George Washington. From this house Betty and her mother were able to walk to visit each other whenever they wanted. George Washington would have made visits to his sister at this house.

Betty married Fielding in 1750. They raised his three children (from his first marriage) and 11 children of their own. Fielding died in 1781. Betty lived till 1797.

The house was built in the 1770s and was later purchased by the Gordon family. They are the individuals who gave it the name Kenmore.

The house was being renovated and so we didn't get to see any of the furniture in the actual house. We were able to view the furniture in a separate room and see how some of the rooms would have been set up. We also had the chance to see several of the rooms that had been updated.

Ms. Edwards really liked the color of the paint in the entryway. I think she plans to paint one of the rooms in her house with the same color.

Kennedy and I had the chance to have our pictures taken in several different locations in the house. Here we are hanging out in the banister.

This is the main stairwell of the house. It is what the family would have used.

Here we are hanging out on the mantle in the master bedroom. It was located on the first floor and was at the front of the house. The room was renovated but had no furniture in it.

A view of one of the archways in the house.
