Guinea Station - Stonewall Jackson Shrine

Another place that we visited today was the "Stonewall" Jackson shrine. This marks the location that Thomas Jackson died.

Robert E. Lee wanted Jackson to recuperate in a safe place. It was felt that Guinea Station was a good location due to the railroad being located nearby. (In fact there is still a railroad there today. We saw a train go by.) Stonewall Jackson was placed in the plantation office building on the Plantation of Thomas C. Chandler. The name of the plantation was "Fairfield."

Three of Chandler's sons were off fighting for the Confederacy Army.

Jackson's doctors felt that the quiet and private outbuilding would be a better place for Jackson to rest then staying in the families home. Jackson had at least five doctors during his stay. his chief surgeon was Dr. Hunter H. McGuire. He was the man who amputated Jackson's arm and removed a ball from his right hand.

Jackson's chaplain, B. Tucker Lacy took Jackson's amputated arm to his brother's family cemetery for burial.

Mrs. Jackson was able to see her husband before he died.

While staying at the plantation office, Dr. McGuire diagnosed pneumonia. Jackson died on Sunday, May 10, 1863. He said that he always wanted to die on a Sunday.

When visiting the grounds today the only structure still remaining in the plantation office building. The main house burned after the Civil War.
