Petersburg - Old Blandford Church

In Petersburg we took the time to visit an old church. Old Blandford Church was built in 1735. Another Episcopal church was built in Petersburg and this one was no longer needed. The city of Petersburg took over the care of the church due to its historical value.

In 1901 the Ladies Memorial Association of Petersburg turned the building into a Memorial Chapel for the Confederate soldiers.

Each of the Confederate states was asked to raise money for one of the windows in the church that would honor their soldiers. The windows were designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. There are a total of 15 windows that he created. Upon his death the molds for these windows was destroyed. They can never be replaced. The windows still exist in the church today.

We were not able to take pictures in the church. Below are pictures that Ms. Edwards took outside of the building. According to our tour guide this is the second largest cemetery in the state of Virgina. Arlington Cemetery is the largest.

This is a picture of the oldest grave in the cemetery.
